Patient Care Overview

Welcome to the Stanford Cancer Center.  We know that a cancer diagnosis can be a stressful time for patients and their families and are here to help every step of the way.  Our doctors, nurses and staff are dedicated to healing patients and offer the most effective treatment in a caring and compassionate manner.  Many of our researchers and physicians are nationally and internationally known for their dedicated work in seeking the most effective cures and treatments for cancer.

We use a multidisciplinary team approach to tackle all cancers, including the most complex and difficult cases.  Patients receiving care in the Stanford Cancer Center have access to the full complement of specialist physicians within the Medical Center who are recognized experts in their field. At our weekly Multidisciplinary Patient Review Boards, customized treatment plans are developed for patients with input from the entire team.  The team will work together and determine, based on the patient’s disease history and other factors, the best treatment option we can offer.

Outstanding nursing care is provided by an experienced team of nurses which includes registered nurses, nurse coordinators, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, research nurses and nursing assistants.  Physician assistants, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists, laboratory technologists and an experienced clinical and administrative staff are also part of the team.

Commitment to Quality

Stanford is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) – designated Cancer Center, a testament to our scientific excellence and outstanding patient care.  Stanford is also one of the founding members of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer.  Stanford is consistently recognized as one of the top hospitals in America for cancer care according to US News & World Report.

Translational medicine is the cornerstone of Stanford’s cancer treatment programs, with more than 250 active clinical trials.  Over 300 physicians and scientists participate in cancer care and basic, translational and clinical research.  Stanford leads the way in developing sophisticated diagnostic imaging technologies and radiation therapy techniques, and novel antibody and biologic therapies used to treat cancer.  Many of our surgeons are pioneering new techniques that offer new hope to patients.

Cancer Supportive Care Program

The Cancer Supportive Care Program is an integrated resource that enhances the treatment process and provides information and support to cancer patients and their families during their care at Stanford.  Our goal is to help our patients and their families cope with cancer in a manner that will reinforce the healing environment of the Stanford Cancer Center. We compliment cancer therapy by integrating all aspects of healing: strengthening the body, educating the mind and nurturing hope and courage.
