Graduate Life at Stanford

Stanford is an amazing place offering a vast array of learning opportunities and support services. Graduate students constitute a bit more than half of the Stanford student population and are an integral part of the intellectual and social life of campus. Like most large research universities, the organizational structure in which services are provided is decentralized. Explore campus in person and look at all of Stanford’s Web pages to learn more about graduate student life.

Here are a few pointers to get you started:

Graduate Housing

Stanford is a residential university that provides on-campus housing for over half of the graduate students and their families. Through its residence program, Stanford seeks to provide graduate students with a supportive, friendly environment where they are encouraged to develop a strong sense of community.

  • Graduate residences offer options for single students, couples, and students with children.
  • Residence assignments are made on the basis of an annual lottery.
  • New students are guaranteed housing their first year at Stanford.

Many students live off campus, in nearby towns (Palo Alto, Mountain View, Menlo Park and Redwood City), or the cities of San Francisco and San Jose.

Health and Health Insurance

The Vaden Health Center is open all year to serve the health needs of Stanford students and their spouses or domestic partners. Vaden provides comprehensive on-site health care, Counseling and Psychological Services, a pharmacy, and health promotion programs.

All students are required to have health insurance coverage. This can be Cardinal Care (the University’s student policy) or an external provider.

Activities for Graduate Students

Whatever questions you have, the Graduate Life Office (GLO) is a comprehensive resource for information and advice on graduate student life. The GLO is housed in the Graduate Community Center (GCC). The GCC also has meeting rooms and a pub.

Hundreds of student organizations cover nearly all interests: academic, international, ethnic, social, and recreational. Stanford student groups are open to graduate students; many of them primarily serve graduate students.
