Stanford Law School

Our Mission

The Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) works across all seven schools at Stanford University to enhance the quality of graduate education. Stanford is a highly decentralized university, and responsibilities for graduate education lie primarily with its departments and schools. VPGE's mission is to assure that Stanford remains at the forefront of graduate education, providing the highest quality educational experiences for students.

Current priorities are to:

  • Administer university-wide graduate fellowship programs
  • Advance graduate student diversity
  • Foster cross-school learning opportunities in interdisciplinary learning and professional development
  • Promote academic innovation, within and across graduate degree programs
  • Recommend, promulgate and interpret university-wide graduate academic policy
  • Facilitate collaborative problem-solving on university-wide issues.

How We Do this

We actively collaborate with Stanford’s schools, departments, and central offices, and with graduate student leaders and organizations. Our small staff works with others across campus on programs to advance University priorities. The VPGE:

  • Provides resources and expertise
  • Convenes people and departments to discuss challenges in graduate education
  • Administers innovative projects in selected areas
  • Serves as a clearinghouse for information and resources
  • Analyzes data on graduate education

A list of VPGE-administered programs is available on this web site.
