Patricia J. GumportVice Provost for Graduate Education Vice Provost Patricia Gumport has been on the Stanford faculty since 1989. She is a professor in the School of Education and specializes in higher education research. Her graduate degrees are from Stanford in education (Ph.D.) and sociology (M.A.). Patti’s research addresses key changes in American higher education, analyzing how universities and colleges respond to pressures for change through initiatives in academic reorganization, interdisciplinarity, graduate education, faculty work, shared governance and collaboration. Her publications include six books, most recently Sociology of Higher Education: Contributions and Their Contexts (2007). She assumed the role of Vice Provost in January, 2007. John BoothroydAssociate Vice Provost for Graduate Education John Boothroyd has been on the Stanford faculty in the School of Medicine since 1982. He served as senior associate dean for research and training at the School of Medicine (2002 - 2005), chair of the school's Microbiology and Immunology Department ( 1999 - 2002) and also was a member of the Commission on Graduate Education. John's research is devoted to learning all aspects of Toxoplasma biology and pathogenesis with the ultimate hope of alleviating suffering from this and other serious parasitic diseases. John works part time in VPGE, while maintaining his teaching, advising and research responsibilities. In addition to teaching graduate students, medical students and postdoctoral fellows, John teaches an undergraduate course on modern plagues. In the summer of 2008, he offered his popular Stanford Graduate Summer Institute course, Using Different Approaches to Solving Complex Problems: Responding to Pandemics, for the second time. His Ph.D. is in Molecular Biology from Edinburgh University. Building 310, Room 201 |
Sheri D. SheppardAssociate Vice Provost for Graduate Education Sheri D. Sheppard has been a professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Design division since 1986. Her research focuses on weld fatigue and impact failures, fracture mechanics and applied finite element analysis. Co-director of the Center for Design Research in the School of Engineering, Sheri received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1985.She is a nationally recognized expert on engineering education. She led a three-year study of engineering education, "Educating Engineers," in the United States at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In 2006-07, Sheppard served as chair of the Faculty Senate. For the last decade, she has been the faculty adviser to the Mechanical Engineering Women's Group at Stanford, which holds an annual seminar series and a welcome program for all female engineers. In 2010, she received the Walter J. Gores Award, Stanford University's highest award for excellence in teaching. Sheri will also be working half time in VPGE. Building 310, Room 201 |

Chris M. GoldeAssociate Vice Provost for Graduate Education Chris Golde joined the VPGE staff in February 2007. Prior to that she was a Senior Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where she was research director for the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate. She is a nationally recognized expert on graduate education—actively conducting research, speaking and publishing on the graduate student experience, student attrition, doctoral pedagogies, and graduate education reform. She is the lead author of At Cross Purposes: What the Experiences of Today’s Doctoral Students Reveal about Doctoral Education (2001), co-editor of Envisioning the Future of Doctoral Education: Preparing Stewards of the Discipline (2006) a compilation of essays on the doctorate, and co-author of The Formation of Scholars: Rethinking Doctoral Education for the 21st Century (2008). Prior to joining Carnegie, she was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a Ph.D. in education and an M.A. in sociology, both from Stanford University. Ann GeorgeAssistant Dean, Research and Graduate Policy Ann George has been at Stanford University since 1992, with responsibilities related to the management of research grants and contracts. In 2003, she assumed responsibilities for graduate policy within the office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and Graduate Policy. With the inception of VPGE, Ann now has a joint appointment in the Dean of Research office and VPGE. She is the point of contact for the Graduate Financial System (GFS) by which graduate students are paid, the Childbirth Accommodation Policy, and university Cardinal Care subsidies. She holds an M.A. in Organizational Communication from The Ohio State University. Building 310, Room 212 |

Pat CookDirector of Fellowships and Programs Pat Cook joined the staff at Stanford two years after she graduated from Lafayette College, spending six months in the Office of Student Affairs at the School of Medicine. For the next twenty years she served in several human resources positions. She has had the opportunity to work with each of the seven schools, as well other University departments, including more than two years with the Graduate Division (1988-91). In 1997, she became program officer for the Stanford Graduate Fellowships (SGF) program. Now she oversees fellowship programs under the auspices of the VPGE, including SGF, the SIGF program and others, for students pursuing a doctoral degree (Ph.D.). Building 310, Room 112 |
Anika GreenDirector of Educational Programs Anika Green started her Stanford career as Assistant Dean for Grad Education and Director of Biosciences Diversity Programs in the School of Medicine. At VPGE she oversees the DARE Doctoral Fellowship Program and works on other educational programs that promote the academic success of Stanford graduate students. Building 310, Room 104 |

Rebecca JantzenAssociate Director for Finance and Programs Rebecca Jantzen began her career at Stanford University in the Graduate School of Business after she graduated from the University of Washington in 1987. She left Stanford in 1995, but returned in 2004 to work in the President and Provost Office. Currently, she is the VPGE budget officer and works with the SGF Program and the Stanford Graduate Summer Institute (SGSI). Building 310, Room 209 |
Blanca VirreyEducational Program and Finance Coordinator Blanca Virrey joined Stanford and the staff of the VPGE office in 2011. She is stimulated at the opportunity to work with this office in support of Stanford's graduate students. Blanca provides administrative support to the Director of Educational Programs and to the Associate Director for Finance and Programs. Anne DazeyExecutive Assistant to the Vice Provost Anne Dazey joined the staff of the VPGE at Stanford in 2011 as the executive associate after serving for over 3 years in the office of the VPUE. Having also worked for the Stanford University Libraries in Geneva, Switzerland, archiving the internal documents and publications of GATT, she is thrilled to be part of a strong working team that provides extraordinary support for Stanford graduate students.
