Financial Support to Advance Diversity

At Stanford University, our commitment to graduate diversity includes a commitment to provide financial support in meaningful ways to help achieve a diverse student body, and to help our students succeed here.

Individual schools may also provide financial support for their students. Contact the Diversity Officer in your school to discuss possibilities.

DARE Doctoral Fellowship Program

Diversifying Academia, Recruiting Excellence

The DARE Doctoral Fellowship Program awards two-year fellowships to:

  • Stanford doctoral students in their final two years
  • who want to investigate and prepare for academic careers
  • whose presence will help diversify the professoriate.

To learn more about this program, see the DARE web page, or the January 2008 article in Stanford Magazine.

Funding for Student Organizations

VPGE has funding available on a competitive basis to support projects and events sponsored by recognized Stanford Voluntary Student Organizations (VSOs). VPGE funds projects to advance graduate student diversity by serving the academic interests of current students and enhancing the quality of their educational experiences.

The application deadlines are November 1, February 1 and April 1 of every year.

Dissertation Research Opportunity Fund

VPGE has funding available on a competitive basis to support dissertation research expenses on diversity-related topics. NOTE: Research grants are available for research costs directly related to the dissertation for doctoral students whose dissertation topics focus on socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, work or life experiences.

Applications are accepted twice each year. See the DDRO web page for additional information, including annual application deadlines and information sessions for potential applicants.

Recruitment support

Faculty members may request up to $500 to defray the cost of bringing prospective graduate students for campus visits. Applicants may include students of an ethnicity that is underrepresented in an academic field; women who are underrepresented in a field; or people who would be the first members of their family to attend graduate school.
