Policy, Governance and Problem-Solving

University-level academic policies are set by the Academic Senate and the Committee on Graduate Studies (C-GS). VPGE recommends, promulgates and interprets University policies related to graduate education and graduate student support. University-wide policies are supplemented by school and departmental policies and procedures.

Included in this section of the VPGE web site are links to:

• The Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures handbook (the GAP handbook), a compilation of university policies and other information related to the academic progress of Stanford graduate students -- from their application and admission, to the conferral of degrees and retention of records
• Information and resources for dealing with problems, including crisis intervention

• Understanding Stanford University’s Fundamental Standard and Honor Code [Judicial Affairs web site]
• Guidance related to two classifications of nonmatriculated graduate students, being implemented at Stanford on September 1, 2011
  • Students of Faculty newly recruited to Stanford University who wish to come to Stanford to complete their doctoral research under the direct supervision of the recruited faculty member, while retaining their student status and graduating from their home institution
  • Visiting Student Researchers who are invited to spend a period of time at Stanford to participate in research activities here.
