Looking up in the new Science and Engineering Quad. The sky was seriously that blue.

I lucked out today. Had to drop something off at the new Huang Center, and decided to time my visit for lunch at Ike's. The lines at Ike's between 12-1 have been reported to be over an hour. I arrived at 11:30, only to find them setting up a "samples" table to welcome the students back. Ike was even there serving (on the left). My goodness those samples were yummy.

Most days there is a conference going on in the Alumni Center. Today's had to do with electrifying the infrastructure in the West to accommodate electric cars--at least that's how an attendee explained it to me as we looked at the electric cars displayed on the side lawn.

White Plaza was abuzz today with student groups reaching out to the new frosh. As I was viewing the scene, this gentleman walked past, taking it all in just like I was.

Move in day is here, and I loved running into the proud parents of Victoria Robles from Nogales, Arizona, who had just moved into Zapata. Welcome Class of '14!

I don't know much about bees, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one with a turquoise head before. I just recently discovered the California Garden, "shaped earth, sculpted concrete benches, and native plants," over near the Cantor Center. It is full of lovely plants still in bloom, bees, butterflies, hummingbirds...

I am always drawn to this totem pole in Dohrmann Redwood Grove, next to the small Art Gallery (see post from July 1). Here is the full-length view.

It was a crisp and oh-so-clear day today. Feels like fall is arriving a bit early this year (not that we had much of a summer!).

There was an open house today at the gorgeous new Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Center. This is the view from the top balcony.

I was a bit uninspired today. There is construction everywhere, readying the campus for the students' return. So I went over to the Lake, which is really dry and brown. I started messing around shooting into the sun, and then messed around some more in Photoshop, and ended up with this. Running in the sun.

The reflections on this Marguerite almost look to me like they are being "pulled" by the wipers.

Over near the cactus garden today there were at least a dozen woodpeckers flying madly about from tree to tree, playing or fighting or I'm not exactly sure what? They were diving a lot in the air, often two or three at a time. I've never seen anything like it. I didn't have the right lens at all, but figured I could crop a lot, which I did. It's not the best shot, but it was so cool to watch them, I wanted to record it.

On the walls at the Coffee House are caricatures of Stanford personalities--students, alumni, faculty and staff. One is of climate expert and biology professor Stephen Schneider, who died last month. His wife and collaborator, Terry Root--a senior fellow at Woods Institute for the Environment--is pictured just above him. Someone has put a green heart next to his picture, with the words, "Steve, The world weeps for you!!!"
