Arts Writer/Practitioner Fellowship

"Milica Tomic's proximity to my topics and amazingly inspiring art work opened a door for me to see things in an entirely new light. Similarly, Victor Gama's artistic work was quite inspiring. I felt a lot of intellectual cross-fertilization with these artists."

-Cecilia Méndez, External Faculty Fellow 2010-11

The Stanford Humanities Center and the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCa) are offering one year-long fellowship to an arts practitioner who is also a writer, scholar, or critic pursuing a research or critical project in the arts. Applicants should be interested in engaging with the intellectual life at Stanford and exploring connections with departments and other centers on campus. The recipient will be in residence with other fellows at the Humanities Center.

The application deadline for 2012-13 has passed. Notify me when new applications are available.
  • Eligibility[+]
Applicants must demonstrate significant professional accomplishment as arts practitioners and as critics or scholars. Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of a scholarly or critical project in the arts and not on the basis of art production.

Applicants may practice in any field of art (visual, performance, composition, mixed- and inter-media, architecture and design). Applicants may, but need not, be affiliated with an academic institution. Independent practitioners are welcome to apply.
  • Requirements[+]
Fellowships are for one full academic year, and require the fellow to be in residence during Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters (mid-September to mid-June). We do not consider applications for different amounts of time. Since we are a residential center, where intellectual life depends on collegial interaction, arts fellows are required to live within a ten-mile radius of Stanford University. Fellows are also expected to attend lunch regularly and to participate in weekly research presentations.

The Arts Practitioner/Writer fellow will be expected to make an intellectual contribution to Stanford University by participating in the scholarly life of the Humanities Center.
  • Stipends[+]
Fellows are awarded stipends of up to $60,000 and a housing and moving allowance of up to $15,000. Applicants who require additional support are expected to seek supplementary funding in the form of external grants or sabbatical or other contributions from home institutions.

The Center is unable to provide or finance medical insurance. Fellows are required to make individual arrangements for reasonable coverage during their fellowship year.
  • Application Process[+]
Applications should be submitted via our online application system. Access to the system will open in August. All applications must be in English. We discourage the submission of additional materials with your application and cannot return such materials to you.

Applicants will be notified when their applications have been received, and will be notified of the fellowship competition outcome in late March.
  • Application Content[+]
    1. Contact and biographical information about the applicant
    2. A curriculum vitae of no more than 10 pages
    3. A statement the significance of your project to knowledge in the humanities, broadly considered (100-word maximum).
    4. A brief description (not more than 1,000 words) of a research project. State clearly the objectives, significance, methodology, and originality of the project in a manner clear to nonspecialists (the selection committee is composed of a range of scholars from humanities and arts fields and may not include specialists in your field). For sample project proposals, view: Project Proposal 1 (PDF); Project Proposal 2 (PDF).
    5. Applicants may provide a web address for committee members to view examples of previous work; supplemental materials may not be uploaded to the online system
    6. Three reference letters. Applicants are advised to have no more than one reference letter from an individual at their home institution. Reference letters should be written in English. If this is impossible, we reserve the right to request a translation. Referees are encouraged to submit letters through our online application system. Referees who wish to submit their letter of reference via email should refer to the External Faculty Fellowships Reference Information and email letters to [email protected]. Reference letters must be received at the Center by the application deadline. Consideration of letters received after that date cannot be guaranteed.
  • Application Criteria[+]
Fellows will be chosen by a multidisciplinary selection committee after an initial screening process by experts in the various disciplines. Applications will be judged based on the following factors:

    1. The promise of the specific research project being proposed.
    2. The research project's potential interest to scholars in different fields of the humanities.
    3. The originality and intellectual distinction of the candidate's previous work.
    4. The applicant's perceived ability to engage in collegial interaction and to contribute to the discussion of presentations. Applicants who have received a major research grant within the last three years generally will not be as competitive as other applicants.
The application deadline for 2012-13 has passed. Notify me when new applications are available.
