About the Stanford Humanities Center

Founded in 1980, the Stanford Humanities Center is a multidisciplinary research institute at Stanford dedicated to advancing knowledge about culture, philosophy, history, and the arts.

The Center's fellowships, research workshops, and public events strengthen the intellectual and creative life of the university, foster innovative scholarship and teaching, and enrich our understanding of the vast record of human achievement.

    Research Workshops

    Research workshops bring together Stanford faculty members and graduate students, along with visiting fellows and scholars at Bay Area institutions, to share research and explore topics of common intellectual concern.

    Research Fellowships

    Residential fellowships afford scholars from diverse disciplines, career stages, and academic institutions the time and space to pursue in-depth research while benefitting from the perspectives of a multidisciplinary community.

    Public Events

    Public events bring prominent and innovative thinkers to Stanford to engage the wider community in discussions of history, culture, and the arts.

    International Visitors

    In collaboration with the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and other units on campus, the Center brings high-profile international scholars to Stanford for short-term visits to share their research with faculty and students.


    Research Lab

    The SHC Research Lab projects put advanced technology to work for humanities research using interpretative, qualitative methods. Projects are mostly long-term (3 yrs +), collaborative, and international in scope.

    The Humanities Center is a research center operating under the auspices of the Dean of Research at Stanford University. The Center works closely with the School of Humanities and Sciences and collaborates frequently with other departments and institutes on campus.

    From its central location on Santa Teresa Street, the Stanford Humanities Center serves as an energizing national site for advanced humanistic research at Stanford and beyond. Its success helps ensure that Stanford is one of the great universities of the world, dedicated to advancing the full range of human understanding.

    The Humanities Center facilities include several meeting rooms that can be reserved for workshops or larger lectures. In the staff wing, the Geballe Library houses books written by current and former fellows, many of which were conceived during the fellowship year at the Center.
