With the threat of a double-dip recession looming, the Stanford Blood Center offered an encore of the successful “Giving Blood Works” promotion for eager job seekers. Donors were able to learn the latest networking techniques from CareerGenerations, meet with local recruiters from VMWare, Tibco, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Option 1 Staffing (Stanford University temp agency), 4Info.com, and Stanford Blood Center, and sign up for free resume critiques. Representatives from Boston Reed and Foothill College Career and College Connections were on hand to share information about their program and services.
Sharks Foundation Blood Drive

HP Pavilion
The Sharks Foundation and Stanford Blood Center teamed up once again to host a blood drive at HP Pavilion in San Jose. Fans who attempted to donate were invited to view the morning skate sessions for both the Sharks and their opponents, the Colorado Avalanche. These loyal fans combined to donate more than 300 red blood cells. Thanks again to the Sharks Foundation for its outstanding support!

Stanford Blood Center won the "Rivals for Life" competition for a third straight year with 271 units collected! This competitive blood drive, hosted by Stanford's BeWell program, takes place annually during the week of the Big Game and pits Stanford donors against Cal (via Red Cross and UCSF Medical Center). Thanks to everyone who helped secure the victory.

HERS Breast Cancer Foundation representatives Karen Jackson and Dr. Vera Packard came to our Hillview location to educate donors and staff about the work they do. We invited them to help us celebrate the Battle of the Sexes competition we held Monday, February 8, through Saturday, February 13. The winner of the competition? The boys! With 476 donations. The girls had a hardy 414! The mission of the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation is to empower women affected by breast cancer, supporting their well-being with post-surgical products and educational services, regardless of financial status. Dr. Vera Packard tells us “it is a great honor for HERS to partner with Stanford Blood Center. Raising awareness of the different needs of patients is a joint effort. We are putting individuals, hearts, and dreams together.”

Our second annual New Year’s resolution health and wellness event expanded in scope. We proudly featured our new partner, Team In Training, who showcased the many opportunities for getting in shape and helping defeat blood cancers at the same time. Donors enjoyed free 15 minute massages by Alex Frigino at Probodywork, bicycle safety demonstrations by Chain Reaction Bicycles, taekwondo demonstrations, plus free healthy cuisine. We held prize drawings for an annual membership to the YMCA and a two hour consultation with Lift Your Spirits Home Transformations.

Every year just before the Big Game, Stanford competes with Cal (via the Red Cross) to see who can draw the most blood at our friendly Rivals for Life blood drives. Eric Stein, Senior Associate Athletic Director at Stanford (pictured), was among the crowd of happy donors. Thank you to the Stanford BeWell program and each of the 250+ donors who came out and helped us beat Cal for the 2nd year in a row!
Fall for Music Concert: Alien Cowboys at Biscuits & Blues

On November 2, melodic rockers, Alien Cowboys, performed at Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco in a free concert for blood donors. Attendees enjoyed an evening of great music and great company. One lucky donor even won a gift certificate for dinner for two at First Crush restaurant! We are grateful for the generous donation of the music, the venue, and the gift certificate.

Our annual Halloween party was spookier than ever this year! Donors were enchanted by a magician, had a fun tarot reading by Madame Jennifer, and got twisted by a balloon artist. Thank you, Whole Foods and Kan Zeman Mediterranean Restaurant, for providing a delectable spread for the event.

Stanford Blood Center and the BeWell @ Stanford team paired up to bring donors an afternoon of free entertainment. Hamburgers & hot dogs (donated by Whole Foods) were served outside at the shaded picnic tables as live music by Grounds for Dismissal played in the background.
Hearts of Summer

Our Hearts of Summer party at Hillview was our annual O Party with a twist - we featured live music throughout the day! Donors nibbled on finger foods while enjoying music from French Casettes, Mark Kostrzewa, Nomi Harper/Frank Reisinger, Amici Brass, and Still Kickin’. A special t-shirt was given out as a thank-you, in addition to prizes including Sunday brunch at Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto and gift certificates for Hobee’s and Celia’s restaurants.
We collected an astounding 85 units of red cells. Of those, 22 were from double red blood cell procedures. Thanks to all who helped make it a success!

Donors gave blood and enjoyed classical music and gourmet food sampling including crepes, juices, and Mediterranean food. They each had an opportunity to win at our spot trivia. Prizes included a pair of tickets for Napa Valley Wine Train, a tour for 15 guests at Savannah Chanelle Winery in Saratoga, and a chartered sailboat ride for 6 from Captain Kirk’s sailing adventures, all of which were donated by the organizations themselves.
Music from Chi Chen (cello), Beeri Moalem (violin) and The Belmont Consort (recorder) kept the crowd entertained throughout the day.
San Jose Earthquakes Soccer Game

One hundred twenty lucky blood donors won pairs of tickets to watch the San Jose Earthquakes soccer team battle Toronto FC. During the couple weeks leading up to the game, donors entered a prize drawing to win the tickets. On game night, each donor was given a co-branded Earthquakes/Stanford Blood Center pennant to wave in the fan section to help promote the blood center.

One of our donor favorites! This annual BBQ was complete with burgers, hot dogs and all the fixin’s. A few brave souls even stepped up to the karaoke machine in the courtyard! Each donor had the opportunity to spin the prize wheel and win at our spot trivia contests. Movie tickets were given out in addition to the popular tie dye and new “recycle life” t-shirts.
Fearbusting: Overcoming Fear to Save Lives

A workshop about facing the fear of needles to donate blood, including a panel of experts comprised of doctors, nurses, psychologists, patients, a 400 units+ donor, and an apprehensive donor. The reluctant donor’s decision to donate was chronicled by a Stanford University Community Writing Project group as a YouTube video (see below). Espressos and finger foods were provided for the donors, as well as a special t-shirt designed by a local artist specifically for the event.

Donors attended special career-counseling events including advice, networking and interview tips, and one-on-one resume counseling from two career experts, Cindy King and Georgia Adamson. Representatives from Stanford’s Office of Staff Employment also attended to accept resumes and discuss current job openings at the university and Stanford Hospital.
“This is such a great event, very timely,” said Eric Armstrong, a blood donor and attendee. “When I saw it advertised, I came right over to donate blood.” Thank you to Eric and the other 133 people that donated blood to attend the event!

A day of donating blood and learning about easy, healthy habits for the new year. Guest speakers included blood recipients, Reach Fitness representatives to discuss Pilates, Stanford Health Improvement Program who gave Tai Chi demos and talked about bodily health, and Advanced Health Center of San Jose, who gave free massages.
Donors were spoiled with snacks (donated by Whole Foods, Chipotle, and Kan Zeman), a t-shirt, $15 Sports Basement coupon, tote bag and the opportunity to win a 1 year YMCA membership, 1 month Reach Fitness membership, or a $20 gift certificate to Healthy Living Classes at Stanford.
