Special Programs

The following special programs are a commitment to provide an environment that stimulates communication and promotes lifelong learning, our special programs stretch beyond the boundaries of traditional medical education and training. We are pleased to offer interested students and faculty the opportunity for continued academic, professional, and personal growth. The following courses and eventsprovide a forum that encourages a broader view of the science and craft of medicine.

Osler Evenings

Guest speakers and attendees gather for informal discussions and advice on career and work life balance. Faculty provide offer residents their perspective on research, science and clinical medicine. The evening presentations began in 2008 and were designed by Abraham Verghese, MD, Senior Associate Chair Theory and Practice of Medicine to highlight the life and work of Sir William Osler, one of the most honored names in medicine.

Stanford Initiative in Bedside Medicine

The philosophy of Stanford’s Department of Medicine is that the practice of medicine is a privilege and a calling, and that it combines both art and science. Abraham Verghese, MD, MACP, professor of medicine and senior associate chair for the theory and practice of medicine, plays important role in the Stanford 25, a key aspect of the new focus on bedside medicine.  More »


Yale/Stanford Johnson and Johnson Global Health Scholars Program

The Global Health Program builds capacity of health care at each of its established sites.  Our goal is to establish longstanding Yale/Stanford Johnson & Johnson Health Overseas Partnerships in Education Centers (HOPE Centers) through focusing our scholars and resources at each of the sites. The program seeks to develop partnerships of patient-centered care and models of teaching in low resource settings.  More »
