A Century of ExcellenceThe West's first medical school was formed by Dr. Elias Cooper in 1858. In the beginning, classes met in the attic space above Cooper's offices at Mission and Third Streets in San Francisco. Cooper's nephew, Levi Cooper Lane, helped establish the school as Cooper Medical College of the Pacific in 1882. On January 31, 1908 the Trustees of Stanford University finalized the agreement to acquire the Cooper Medical College as Stanford's Medical Department. For the first 50 years, the Medical Department remained in San Francisco where the focus was primarily clinical. In 1959 the Medical School was moved from San Francisco to the campus in Palo Alto. With an entirely new slate of department chairs, the School established and intensified its research programs. Over the past 50 years Stanford University School of Medicine has earned an international reputation as a leader in the world of science and medicine. Join us as we celebrate a century of excellence.
