The School of Engineering feted Bechtolsheim recently as one of its “Engineering Heroes,” the revered alumni and faculty who have reshaped the world through their transformative work. As a graduate student at Stanford, Bechtolsheim invented the workstation, an affordable, high-end computer that was to engineers what the PC was to the average American. He later co-founded Sun Microsystems.
