Friday Morning Coffee
This informal gathering is an ideal way to meet other spouses and learn about the many options for enriching your stay in the Stanford area. Conversation tables offer an informal way to meet others, practice English and share experiences. Join us every Friday, between 10 a.m. and noon! Also join Chula during the Friday Coffee for Songs for Children, around 11:00 am in the Back Lounge! We each bring a snack or fruit or juice to go with the coffee and tea provided by the I-Center. Volunteers are always needed to help set -up (at 9:45 a.m.) and put away afterward! Everyone (with and without children, new and returning) is equally welcome. First Friday Morning Coffee of the quarter is June 28. Welcome!
Spouse Workshops, Groups & Events
- GetINside-Lecture Series: With Miriam Rubelt. Weekly, Tuesdays 1:00-2:00 pm ongoing. GetINside a foreign Country's Culture, Traditions and Tourist Hotspots.
Spouses at Stanford University tell us something about their home country, favorite meals, fashion, traditions, culture, tourism centers or pop-culture. Everybody, including moms with kids, is welcome! This is a very informal get-together to meet new people and share experiences! Free snacks and drinks will be provided.

- Guys Night Out: With Ulrich Ritter. Join other male spouses for a beer to meet others and share ideas about possible future activities. Contact Ulrich at [email protected] for more details and the next date.
- Hiking Group. With Heather & Helena. Mondays, Bi-weekly at 10am Dates: 1 July, 15 July, 29 July. Location: Meet in the parking lot in front of the Cine Arts Theater in Palo Alto Square, 3000 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94306. Join us for our bi-weekly hike to explore the spectacular nature of the bay area. Typical hike length is 2-5 hours (3-8 miles) & ranges from easy to moderate. Please note good physical fitness & sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Also suggested are: snacks/lunch, water, sunscreen & sunglasses, a raincoat, hat, camera, & binoculars if available. Fee: Gas contribution & occasional parking fee contribution required depending on park location. Hike and Transportation is each person’s own responsibility. - Lectures on Art History: With Saskia Jogler. Biweekly, Wednesdays, 1:00pm-2:00pm. Starts July 3. Visual art provides an extraordinary and exciting source of information about past cultures and their relation to the world. This lecture series focuses on European art history from the Middle Ages to the modern period and gives insight into a great variety of genres like architecture, sculpture, oil painting, mosaic, miniature etc. Each lecture deals with a specific artwork to explain technique, style, meaning and functions. Topics are, for example, the mosaic decoration of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul or Goya´s aquatint cycle ‘Los Caprichos’. In some cases, there are related artworks on campus (for example the mosaics of the Memorial Church) which we can examine afterwards together. Free.
- Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga with Babies: With Yuko Ikeda. Weekly, Thursdays, starts July 11 from 12:00-1:00 pm. This is a prenatal and postnatal Yoga class for moms with babies! Please wear comfortable clothing that is suitable for stretching and ease of movement. Also bring some baby toys and an organic blanket. Please don’t eat anything heavy 3 hours before the class. A light snack is ok. Bring your yoga mat! Free.

Yoga for All-Vinyasa Flow Yoga: With Yuko Ikeda , Weekly Thursdays, starts July 11 from 10:15 -11:45 am. This Yoga class is from level 1 to level 2. Vinyasa flow moves steadily from pose to pose in sequences of movements synchronized with ujjyayi pranayama, often pausing to hold poses for various lengths of time while maintaining the rhythmic flow of the breath. Please wear comfortable clothing that is suitable for stretching and ease of movement. Please don’t eat anything heavy 3 hours before the class. A light snack is ok. Bring your yoga mat and a bottle of water! Free.

Woman’s Night Out. With Sally Fox & Suzanne van Winden. Every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 8 pm . The Woman´s Night Out is an informal get-together for women and a wonderful way to exchange experiences with other international spouses at Stanford. - ZUMBA: With Katie Detwiler. Weekly, Thursdays, 5:15 to 6:15pm,ongoing. Are you ready to party yourself into shape? That’s exactly what the Zumba program is all about. It’s an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party™ that’s moving millions of people toward joy and health. Free.

Language Classes
Informal English Classes
Brazilian Portuguese and Culture: With Elaine Nunes. Weekly, Wednesdays, 3:00-4:30 pm, starts June 26. How about a trip to Brazil, its language and culture? This course is open for all interested in learning the basic skills to communicate in Portuguese. Our destination? Rio de Janeiro - the marvelous city. We will explore many scenes and situations through videos and pictures, so that you can express yourself effectively from the boarding moment until you go back home. Free.
French for Beginners . With Elmira Baitova. Weekly, Thursdays 2:00-3:30 pm. Starts June 27. French language for Beginners is an introduction to the French language and French culture. The class is for students who have never learned French or whose knowledge is limited to just a few words. It combines basic grammar points and vocabulary for everyday situations. Free.
French Conversation Class. With Daniele Hérin. Weekly, Thursdays, 1:15-2:30 pm, starts July 11. The class focuses on spoken French to communicate in everyday life: in a supermarket, restaurant, bar, public transport; to ask for directions. Discussions about places to visit, regional specialities, administrative and geographical structures. Free.
Advanced Conversational Hindi: With Krishna Hariani. Weekly, Mondays 1:00-2:30pm From June 24 - Aug 1. This course will continue from where last quarter’s Conversational Hindi course left off. Maximum 10 participants. Free.

Please note: For most cooking classes there is a fee. To register and pay for a cooking class, please email the teacher for that cooking class. Ask them about refunds, recipes and other issues concerning your attendance.
- Advanced Cuisine: With Lise Miege. Fridays, 12:30 – 3:00 pm, from July 12-Aug 9. Do you want to experience bold associations & challenging recipes? This class is for you! We will cook:
- 07/12: Sauteed shrimps with their aniseed flavored vegetables & Caneles.
- 07/19: Chorizo and pepper clafoutis & Pear and chocolate cake.
- 07/26: White fish fillet with crunchy bacon and preserved potatoes Palmier.
- 08/02: Sauteed coffee flavored chicken with scallions and rice & Strawberry creme caramel.
- 08/09: Chicken breast on a cereal crust and potatoes ecrase & Tarte amandine

- Greek cooking class: With Maria Chatzixenofon. July 3 & August 13 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm. In the first class we will cook the famous mouzaka and Greek salad. In the second one, we will learn how to cook two appetizers tzatziki and saganaki and for main dish spetsofai! Bring an apron and a box to take home any leftovers! Fee: $10.00. - Ice-Cream Making and Cookie Baking: With Vida Revilla. Thursday, August 1 from 12:00-2:00 pm. We’ll be making cold refreshing desserts like ice-cream, frozen fruit yogurt in just 30 minutes, and then complimenting them with freshly baked cookies. Fee: $3.00. - Indian, Regional cooking. With Juthica Stangl. Tuesdays, June 25, July 2, 9 and 16 from 10:00-12:00. The general belief is that Indian food is “curries”. This class will teach you how varied Indian food can be from region to region. Even though Curry is used in all regions, it is not that which is popularly known as curry powder. What is used are spices, in different proportion for different vegetables, meat or fish. The staple can be rice or variety of breads depending on which region it is. - Vegetarian Indian Cooking Class: With Priyanka Sharma. Mondays, 11:00 am–1:00 pm. Starts July 1 As the summer arrives, it is the time to enjoy some cool and healthy drinks! So, please join this class to learn how to prepare vegetarian snacks and drinks!! Bring an apron and a box to take home any leftovers! Fee: $12.00. Max. 6 students per class. - Mexican Cooking: With Natalia Agraz. Tuesdays July 2 & 9 from 1:00-3:00 pm. Are you a Mexican food lover? Do you want to learn how to prepare authentic Mexican food? Join us! We will prepare some easy and delicious Mexican dishes. Bring an apron and a box to take home any leftovers! Fee: $10.00 per class. Max. 6 students per class. - Taiwanese Cuisine: With Emily Chen. Thursday, July 11 & 25, from 1:00-4:30 pm. In this class, some famous Taiwanese food will be introduced. - Solar Cooking Demonstration: With Vida Revilla.Friday, July 26 from 11:00–12:00. Sunshine with its many roles can transform edibles into a delicious meal. With the use of a solar oven, we will demonstrate simple sun-cooked dishes like soup and snacks. Fee: Free.

Especially for Moms
- Conversational Skills for Moms with Babies: With Henry Lum. Weekly, Mondays and Fridays, 9.30-11.00 am June 24 to August 5 Practice conversational skills with emphasis on listening, understanding, and speaking in an interactive environment. Each class member will select and lead a discussion on her selected topic and present a summary of the discussion’s main points at the end of the discussion. Specific elements of the TOEFL requirements will also be reviewed and discussed. Free.
- From Belly to Baby: With Sophie Adam & Annette Hennigs. Weekly, Thursdays from 2:00-3:00 pm. Starts July 18 We are both physicians (OB/Gyn and Infectious diseases) who recently became mothers of a baby girl and a baby boy; both born in January 2013. We thought of hosting a get together of pregnant women and new mothers just like us to discuss themes in which we have an expertise (such as prenatal or pregnancy associated problems, vaccinations for babies, childhood infectious diseases). Other theme suggestions are welcome. The discussion is meant to be a non-binding group discussion and an exchange of views-ideally to exchange views from different cultures with guidance through the tutors and should not replace a qualified visit at your OB/Gyn or Pediatrician. Especially for Children
- Fun for Kids (and Parents). With María Soledad Gómez Manchón. Fun for Kids is an outing-series for parents with kids. We will have the outings one Tuesday each month at 10:00 am. Each family provides its own transportation, or you can arrange to carpool or get a ride with others. Please see the bulletin board or the spouse program newsletter for more details or contact [email protected] for more information.
- Baby and Toddler Group. With Cris andFay. Meets Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. to noon in the I-Center patio or Assembly room if it rains. Contact Cris ([email protected]) with questions. All are welcome at this informal playgroup! The last 30 minutes Fay joins us with her guitar for singing and movement for the children! Free.
- Water Playgroup. With María Soledad Gómez Manchón and Karin Sterky. Meets Tuesdays at 11:00 am Summer is coming and there are some parks around with fountains to enjoy with our kids. It’s a very nice activity to have our kids “soaking” in the hot days of “the sunny California”. Enjoy every Tuesday with us (except “Fun for Kids” Tuesday)! Please bring towels, swim clothes, sand and water toys, picnic clothes and lunch.
