American-Thai Fellowship

New in 2012! American-Thai Fellowship

The Teach Thailand Corps (TTC) places American college and university graduates in underserved Thai schools to teach English and other subjects. TTC aims to bridge the discrepancy between underserved rural schools and wealthier urban counterparts—specifically targeting the crucial gap in English-language education and offering an overall enhancement in the quality of teaching and community/school involvement. TTC teachers have a unique opportunity to provide excellent teaching and lay a sound foundation for the education of children and the development of communities, which will transform the trajectories of both—and impact Thailand’s development—in profound ways. In return, volunteers spend an enriching and life-changing time living, contributing and learning in Thailand as they gain valuable skills and insight for future career endeavors.

The American-Thai Fellowship funds two graduating seniors/co-terms (one research fellow and one teaching fellow) to work for 12 months in Thailand on entrepreneurial efforts to improve education and development through TTC. Length of service is from June to May. Fellows work in the foundation’s head office in Lampang, in Northern Thailand, and report to and are supervised and mentored by Dr. Nirund Jivasantikarn, founder of American-Thailand Foundation, Yonok Foundation, Teach Thailand Corps, and Yonok University. The foundation supports each fellow with round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Bangkok, comfortable and convenient housing, and a monthly stipend for living allowance and incidental expenses. A work permit, visa, and fundamental health insurance are also supported. Upon arrival in Thailand, the foundation provides language and culture orientation. About five TTC teachers teach and work in various schools in Lampang while the rest are placed in schools from one to six hours away.

American-Thai Foundation Research Fellowship

The American-Thai Foundation Research Fellow works with the American-Thai Foundation and Yonok Foundation on research, development, and communications of its mission and programs in education and human capacity building of Thai youth. The fellow interacts with associated Thai staff and volunteers and collaborate with TTC teachers on program coordination, communications and development.

American-Thai Foundation Teaching Fellowship

The American-Thai Foundation Teaching Fellow’s role is twofold. Like the TTC teachers, the fellow teaches English in an underserved school. In addition, and just as importantly, the fellow works with school administrators, academic affairs officers, and the English department and teachers to improve fundamentally and profoundly the ways English is taught to make teaching and learning more effective. The fellow’s findings and recommendations will help inform and enrich ongoing and future efforts to improve English education in Thailand.
