Philanthropy Fellowship

Philanthropy Fellowships provide Stanford students with full-time placements in Bay Area grantmaking foundations. Bruce Sievers, Visiting Scholar at the Haas Center, serves as academic mentor to students who are awarded this fellowship.  Haas staff pair selected fellows with an appropriate placement organization through a facilitated process during spring quarter.

Interested applicants are strongly encouraged to attend a Philanthropy 101 Workshop, either November 15, 2011 from 12-1pm or January 11, 2012, from 12-1pm in the Haas Center Donald Kennedy Room.  Lunch provided.

Examples of foundations that past fellows have served with include:

The Sand Hill Foundation supports five summer fellows in Bay Area grantmaking foundations, an Arrillaga Fellow will be chosen to work at Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation supports and hosts 1-2 John Gardner Fellows.

Philanthropy Fellows learn about and participate in the grant making process at all levels. Service responsibilities may include:

  • participating in grant review committees
  • assisting in the evaluation of foundation programs such as workshops, grant information sessions, and site visits
  • working with program officers and associates conducting research on sources and trends in the foundation’s grantmaking, as well as in particular issue areas
  • representing the foundation at community meetings, site visits, conferences and other public events
  • interacting with grantees in person or over the phone

Each Philanthropy Fellow receives a base stipend of $4,000 to support travel and living expenses during the summer. Financial aid and supplemental funding is available to students who qualify.
