House Description

Durand is a 35-person house on the Upper Row. Our rooms, all one room doubles except for staff singles and a most epic triple, are small, but the beautiful, recently renovated first floor provides ample space for socializing and studying. Our bright, sunny dining room filled with round tables is an ideal place for early morning paper writing as well as late night "study breaks." The TV lounge boasts the most important Durand resident, our giant, custom-built, blue couch, endearingly known as "Couchie." The brand new big screen television doesn't hurt either. The parlor has a working fireplace and a well lit alcove for study sessions and private dinner conversations. Our veteran chef, Gilly, is among the longest tenured chefs on the Row, and her quirky humor complements her tasty food.

Though not known as an overly social house, Durand's small, intimate size allows residents to get to know all of their neighbors and form a community. Durand's position on the Upper Row has led to strong connections with other houses, most notably Slav Dom and 717, with shared social events like backyard barbecues bringing residents from all three houses together. Mayfield Playfield, right across the street from Durand, is a great place to play sports or just sit in the sun.

In the spring, Durand hosts its annual all-campus party, "Durandom Hookup" which traditionally attracts an awesome live band or DJ and a lively crowd.

This year, Durand has a slightly unusual staff arrangement in that the House Manager and Social Manager positions have been combined. As a result, all staff members have slightly more responsibility in planning social events, but also are guaranteed one of the five singles in the house.
