Patient Advocacy Program

Clinic Role

Stanford students build community health knowledge and learn Patient Advocacy skills through both a Stanford-based course and clinic-based training.  The year-long course covers a wide range of topics: 

  • The context of care in community health clinics
  • Health status and disparities in the local patient population
  • The intersection of socioeconomic status and health
  • The social role of health care providers
  • Taking patient histories and charting appropriately
  • Administering the Staying Health Assessment
  • Health education theory and behavior change
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Community resource referral
  • Cultural competency in health care
  • Medical interpreting and working with interpreters
  • Working with sensitive cases and situations
The students also complete HIPAA training on patient confidentiality and OSHA training on clinic safety.  Throughout the year, students participate in classroom role-plays and case presentations to hone their clinical skills.
