Special Internships

Each year, many students find rewarding summer internships through innovative GSB programs. These programs connect students with opportunities at international (GMIX), entrepreneurial (ESP), and public and nonprofit organizations (SMIF).

Global Management Immersion Experience (GMIX)

GMIX experiences provide opportunities for students to spend four weeks working in a non-U.S. country in corporate, government, or NGO-sponsored settings. GMIX sponsors are asked to provide students with a well-defined project with a clear deliverable. Upon completing the GMIX, students have the option to write a paper on a business topic related to their GMIX experiences for which they receive one to two units of academic credits.

Typically, students are available to participate in a GMIX during August and September after they have spent 8-10 weeks with their full-time summer employer. GMIX sponsors are asked to provide a minimum of housing and a living allowance, with airfare appreciated. GMIX is offered through the Center for Global Business and the Economy (CGBE).

To recruit a student for GMIX, go to "Alumni/Student Job Postings" on the Recruiter Dashboard. Select "Add a New Job" and follow the on-screen directions.

Entrepreneurial Summer Program (ESP)

ESP facilitates internships with early-stage companies. This program is offered through the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies (CES).

Students spend the summer with an entrepreneurial company under the guidance of an executive mentor. Previous internships have been in a wide range of industries—from cleantech and software to internet and consumer products. Opportunities in marketing, business development, sales, strategy, and operations are located globally.

ESP also has a funding element. Supplementary funding is offered to selected first-year MBA students who find summer employment with an entrepreneurial organization that cannot pay typical wages. Information about funding, as well as the application for approval for ESP funding, is included in the link below.

To recruit a student for one of these opportunities, go to "Alumni/ Student Job Postings" on the Recruiter Dashboard. Select "Add a new job" and follow the on-screen directions. A separate ESP application must be submitted to the CES. Applications are accepted from February to April.

Stanford Management Internship Fund (SMIF)

Through SMIF, the Stanford GSB financially and programmatically supports MBA students who apply their management skills to public, nonprofit, and social purpose for-profit organizations during the summer between their first and second years of the MBA program. SMIF has supported over 450 summer interns in more than 300 diverse organizations around the world, including microfinance, education, public health, environment, social service, philanthropy, government, and social purpose for-profit ventures.

SMIF Fellowships may supplement the salaries provided by employers who cannot afford to pay average MBA wages.
