Class of '72 Panel: Passing On Values For Our Future
Bechtel Conference Center, Encina Hall Think about all that’s happened in the world in the last 40 years – the war in Vietnam, the civil rights movement, feminism, countless medical advancements, the birth of the internet, the election of our first African American President, conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, repeal of ‘don't ask, don't tell,’ the boom, bust and rebirth of the dot com industry, the broadening definition of what it means to be a family in America, the rise of China as a global economic power, the onset of googling and twittering and friending on Facebook. (To name just a few!) How have these and other experiences changed our perspectives and expectations over the last four decades? How will they continue to shape us, as we prepare to transition to another phase of our lives? What will that new phase look like and how will it be different from the ‘retirement’ our parents knew? How can we use our experiences of past, present, and future to help guide the Stanford students of today. |

Join us on October 5th as we reflect on 25 years of amazing journeys, life-changing connections, and the subtle (or not-so-subtle) influences Stanford has had in our lives. Join us also as we look forward with excitement to our next 25 years. |

Bargaining with Baseball, Bill Gould
Law School, Room 290 (F-7) In 1995, William Gould, then chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, cast the deciding vote to obtain the injunction that ended the longest strike in baseball history after seventeen years of peaceful relations between baseball labor and management. Professor Gould will discuss the practical impact of law on America's pastime, considering labor-management relationships and conflict, exploring player-owner disputes, free agency, collective bargaining and racial integration. He’ll conclude with the "steroids era,” the problem with maintaining Jackie Robinson's legacy in the 21st century and globalization. cap: 160 William B. Gould IV, the Charles A. Beardsley Professor of Law, Emeritus has been an influential voice on worker-management relations for more than forty years and served as chairman of the National Labor Relations Board. In the hope of improving cancer treatment and prevention, his laboratory uses microarrays to study transcriptional responses to DNA damage in cancer patients. Professor Chu received the Rita Allen Foundation Award for Cancer Research and the Burroughs-Wellcome Clinical Scientist Award for Translational Research. Estate Planning in Uncertain Times, B. Howard Pearson, '76
Law School, Room 190 (F-7) In December 2010, Congress passed legislation that determined the gift and estate tax law for 2010-12 ($5 million exemption, with added flexibility in 2010 for decedent’s estates). If Congress does nothing, the exemption will return to $1 million with an increased tax rate. Will Congress ever pass a more comprehensive approach to estate and gift taxes? More importantly, how should one plan estate affairs under these circumstances? Pearson discusses estate planning techniques under the current law and what may change in the future. capacity: 115 B. Howard Pearson, '76, is the development legal counsel and director of Principal Gifts at Stanford University and a lecturer at Stanford Law School where he teaches Trusts and Estates and Estate Planning. He joined the firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP where he was an associate and partner in the field of estate planning for fifteen years before joining Stanford in 1995. Mr. Pearson has served regularly on panels and committees of the American, State and local Bar Associations and the Practicing Law Institute and is co-editor of California Probate Practice, Matthew Bender. |

Health Care Reform in the U.S. - Where Do We Go From Here? Don Barr
Cummings Art Building, Annenberg Auditorium, lower level (D-7) The Affordable Care Act continues to be at the center of the often heated debate about the direction health care reform should take in the United States. The Supreme Court decision upholding substantially all of the act only fanned the flames of debate. Professor Barr will present the core issues of American health policy addressed by the Act, and consider what has been left undone. capacity: 351 Donald Barr, MS ’90, PhD ’93, is an associate professor in pediatrics and Center for Health Policy/Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research Associate. He’s interested in the reform of premedical education, expanding access to health care for California's low-income population, social and economic factors contributing to health disparities and measuring primary care quality. |

Multitasking: How It is Changing the Way You and Your Children Think and Feel, Cliff Nass
School of Education, Cubberley Auditorium (E-6) The most important trend in the use of technology is the growth of multitasking, the use of multiple media streams at one time. Public Service and the Renewal of American Democracy, Larry Diamond
Encina Hall, Bechtel Conference Center (D-8) As the 2012 election campaign enter its final stretch, opinion polls reveal high levels of public disenchantment with politics and government, particularly partisan polarization, Congressional gridlock, and the large role of special interest money in politics. Americans feel an acute need for reform and renewal of our democracy, but shy away from political engagement out of cynicism or despair. Public service can be a vehicle for democratic renewal. In this panel, Larry Diamond will discuss revitalizing American democracy with alumni of Stanford in Government. Panelists include: - Michael Ortiz '05, Executive Office of the President, White House- Gary Rosen ’88, Weekend Editor, Wall Street Journal - Gretchen Welch ’78, Olympic Coordinator, US Embassy London, Department of State Larry Diamond, '73, MA '78, PhD '80, is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Quantum Theory and the Concept of Absolute Size, Michael Fayer
Main Quad, Bldg 200 (History corner), Room 002, lower level (D- 6/7) There are a vast number of common things we experience everyday that requires a basic knowledge of Quantum Theory to understand them. What makes blueberries blue and strawberries red, that is, what is the reason things have color? The common understanding of size, big vs. small, is wrong. We usually think of size as relative, but size is actually absolute. This nature of size gives rise to what initially appear as strange quantum phenomena, such as a particle being in two places at once. Understanding does not require math, just a little mental gymnastics. Following this talk, the Stanford Bookstore will have books available for sale and signing. capacity: 160 |

The Science of Happiness, Fred Luskin, PhD '99
Memorial Auditorium (C/D-7) Dr. Luskin teaches a variety of classes on happiness at Stanford. He's part of a movement that looked at psychology in the mid-1990's and saw science based on what's wrong with people: misery, anger, frustration, and depression. His focus is not on what’s gone wrong, but instead on what makes people happy and why. He describes the neurobiology behind mood states and offers strategies for finding the good, becoming more peaceful, improving relationships and appreciating yourself. Following this talk, the Stanford Bookstore will have books available for sale and signing. Fred Luskin, PhD ’99, is director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects and a senior consultant in wellness and health promotion services at Vaden Health Center. He has engaged in international work with victims and survivors of violence in Northern Island conflicts, Ground Zero, and Sierra Leone, yielding significant results in forgiveness, stress reduction and enhanced states of well-being. The China Threat: Fact or Fiction? Scott Rozelle
School of Education, Cubberley Auditorium (E-6) China is often portrayed in the media as an unstoppable juggernaut that will continue to grow in the coming decades at a pace so fast that it will soon surpass the US and take the stage as the world's supreme superpower. However, for those of us old enough to remember, such predictions were made for the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s and Japan in the 1980s. Is China really a threat? Or are there reasons to believe China's growth is vulnerable and will end up stagnating in the coming decades? capacity: 390 Scott Rozelle is the Helen Farnsworth Senior Fellow in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research focuses almost exclusively on China and is concerned with agricultural policy, rural resources, and the economics of poverty. Professor Rozelle is the co-director of the Rural Education Action Project (REAP), a set of studies that seek to evaluate China's new education and health programs and have an impact on policy. He is fluent in Chinese and has established a research program in which he has close working ties with several Chinese collaborators and policy makers. |

Misled by the Map: Geography Gets Political, Martin Lewis
Main Quad, Building 200 (History corner), Room 034, basement level (D-6) The standard world political map appears to be a straightforward depiction of the earth's sovereign states, but in actuality, it forwards a vision of how we think the world ought to be structured. As a result, several nonexistent countries are depicted on the map while several existing ones are omitted. capacity: 83 Martin Lewis is a senior lecturer in international history. At Stanford since 2002, his current research is on the core-periphery model of global spatial relations, focusing on its application to issues in Philippine and world history. Professor Lewis focused on global geography, writing (with Karen Wigen), The Myth of Continents: A Critique of Metageography. He also co-authored the world geography textbook, Diversity Amid Globalization: World Regions, Environment, Development, and is the former associate editor of The Geographical Review. |

Sex and the Law, Bill Abrams, '76
Main Quad, Building 200 (History corner), Room 030, basement level (D-6) Societies and government have attempted to regulate sexual conduct in many respects - marriage, such as same sex and polygamy; access to and funding for contraceptives; homosexuality; health care and sex education; abortion; pornography; and pedophilia. These issues are among the most controversial and polarizing in the fall elections at all levels. Come find out what the government can and can't do, the policy reasons and implications for society. capacity: 63 Bill Abrams, '76, P'13, consulting professor in human biology, teaches courses on courage, children and the law, policy, constitutional law and science and the law. He has handled a number of high-profile pro bono matters through the U.S. and California Supreme Courts, particularly involving the death penalty, education, rights of children and youth, and children's welfare. He is a recipient of the California Lawyer of the Year Award, the State Bar of California Wiley Manual Award for pro bono legal representation and has been named as one of Daily Journal's Top 100 Lawyers in California. Tax Politics & Policy After the 2012 Election, Tammy Frisby
Main Quad, Building 300, Room 300 (E-6) Since Congress and President Obama are unlikely to reach a deal on extension of the Bush-Obama tax cuts before the November elections, the end of 2012 and early 2013 will be a time of major tax policy decisions. This class will discuss several scenarios, including "Taxmageddon" (also referred to as a plunge off the "Fiscal Cliff" in January 2013) and the possibility of an overhaul of the U.S. tax code. capacity: 100 Tammy Frisby is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. She also teaches in Stanford's political science department and in the university's public policy program. Frisby studies both national and state politics and policy making. She is currently writing a book about the politics of the income tax in U.S. From September 2007 to August 2009, she served as Executive Director of Stanford's Bill Lane Center on the American West. |

Walt Whitman's Body Language, Gavin Jones
Main Quad, Building 200 (History corner), Room 002, basement level (D-6) Walt Whitman was perhaps the most photographed writer of the nineteenth century. Looking at some of the many images of Whitman along with readings of his poetry, we will explore how Whitman's self-fashioning of his visual self helps us to understand the nature of his literary personality as it develops in his most celebrated poem, "Song of Myself." capacity; 160 Gavin Jones is professor of English at Stanford, where he is currently serving as department chair. He teaches courses on nineteenth and twentieth century American literature. He is the author of Strange Talk: The Politics of Dialect Literature in Gilded Age America and American Hungers: The Problem of Poverty in U.S. Literature, 1840-1945, and the editor of a recent scholarly edition of Sylvester Judd's neglected "transcendental" novel, Margaret: A Tale of the Real and Ideal, Blight and Bloom. He has published articles on George W. Cable, Theodore Dreiser, W.E.B. DuBois, Sylvester Judd, Paule Marshall, Mark Twain, and Herman Melville, in journals such as American Literary History, New England Quarterly, and African American Review. |
