Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Fees and Eligibility
Any Stanford student who has paid the Campus Health Service Fee is eligible for a mental health evaluation without additional charge. A CAPS therapist will do an initial evaluation and discuss treatment options. If your concerns can be addressed by short term counseling, CAPS provides this service at no charge. If you request services as a couple, only one of you needs to be a student for short term counseling. There is no charge for brief couples counseling. CAPS provides free medication evaluations. Ongoing medication management is on a fee-for-service basis. If medication is prescribed by a CAPS psychiatrist, medication follow-up visits are on a fee-for-service basis. The co-payment is determined by your insurance coverage and your diagnosis.
We only provide direct billing for Cardinal Care insurance to Value Options. For any other insurance, we ask that you pay for the service. We will provide you with a summary of services that you can submit to your own insurance company upon request.
In general, all fees are collected prior to each session. If you miss a session, there is a $15 fee for sessions that are not canceled at least 24 hours ahead of your appointment. Most insurance companies do not reimburse for missed sessions.
If you cannot afford the full cost or co-payments for services, reduced fees are possible. Please discuss this with the clinician with whom you are meeting.
