Cultural Events

Washington is not only the political capital of the world, but it is also an internationally recognized cultural center. During their term at BSIW, students attend a variety of cultural events, which may include:

• the Washington National Opera;
• a world-renowned dance company performance;
• the National Symphony Orchestra,
• plays at Arena Stage
• plays at Folger Shakespeare Theater or The Shakespeare Company

We take day trips, which may include:

Philadelphia

In order to appreciate our geographic surrounding, and understand U.S. history more fully, we visit Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia, we tour Independence Hall, visit the Liberty Bell and spend a few hours at the National Constitution Center. We enjoy a colonial-themed dinner at the historic City Tavern.

Gettysburg

Additionally, we visit the site of the Gettysburg battle in Pennsylvania. This battle was one of the most significant turning points of the Civil War. After learning more about the war at the Visitors’ Center, we tour the battlefield with a licensed battlefield guide and re-enact battle lines.

Mt. Vernon

The home of the first president is just across the Potomac. We visit Mt. Vernon Estate and Gardens to gain some insight into George Washington’s life.

Monticello

Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, is south of Bing Stanford in Washington. Jefferson was born in Monticello and lived his remaining days on the plantation after serving as Secretary of State, Vice President and President.
