Shorenstein APARC seeks experienced financial manager

Are you an experienced financial manager who enjoys financial forecasting, budgeting and working with leaders on an organization’s financial health? If so, then consider applying for the financial manager position with the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. The financial manager has responsibility for Shorenstein APARC's financial operations and financial planning. The position reports to the faculty director and works closely with the associate director for administration in the exchange of financial data ensuring the Center’s short and long-term financial stability.

Responsibilities

• Creates and monitors financial forecast to assure that the Center is meeting budget goals and recommends budget modifications to meet goals.
• Financial forecasting for various Center revenue sources and expenses.
• Prepares Center’s annual budget and enters it into the University’s system.
• Manages mid-year variance reporting and participates in fiscal year-end close.
• Leads quarterly and annual financial meetings with Center leadership.
• Advises Center leadership on tradeoffs among various expense options.
• Develops tools for assessing viability of the Center’s financial commitments and the tradeoffs that result from those commitments.
• Serves as a liaison between principal investigators and the Research Management Group and Office of Sponsored Research by managing the internal pre-award process (including budget development and proposal submission) and post-award sponsored funding.
• Approves Center’s financial transactions, initiates financial transactions, including iJournals, reimbursements, labor distributions and adjustments, and invoice payments.
• Ensures compliance with federal, state and university policies and procedures.

Qualifications

BS/BA degree or equivalent preferably in accounting, business, or related field in work that reflects thorough understanding of accounting principles and at least five years’ of proven work experience in non-profit and/or in fund-based accounting systems is required. Must have experience in sponsored research administration, both pre- and post-award, including experience in collaborating with principal investigators in budget creation, monitoring and reporting of research expenditures. Must have seasoned financial managements experience with financial forecasting, budget preparation and analysis of trends and their impact on an organization’s near and long-term financial status. Must have outstanding analytical, financial modeling and management and communication skills (presentation, oral and written), advanced MS Excel skills and experience with Oracle, Hyperion, People Soft, FFIT, Spiders systems are a plus. Stanford experience desirable, but not required.
