Culture and Mind
Faculty in the Department have deep-rooted interests in the way that mind and emotion shape and are shaped by society and culture. Richard Klein has argued that the Neolithic revolution was made possible by genetic changes which altered cognitive ability. Ian Hodder explores the cognitive changes enabled by new forms of social and technological innovation. Angela Garcia looks at the emotional landscape of addiction within Hispano families. Tanya Marie Luhrmann studies the way different theories of mind, and different practices of mind, alter mental experience in prayer, and also in psychosis. Thomas Blom Hansen uses psychoanalytic theory to understand the violence of nationalist parties in Mumbai.
