Anthropology of Religion

Many faculty engage with the nature of religion in the Stanford Department of Anthropology. Liisa Malkki studies religion and globalization, with an emphasis in African and humanitarian aid. Kabir Tambar studies religion and modernity, with an emphasis on Turkey. John Rick is concerned with the role that early religion plays in the development of Andean political structure. Tanya Luhrmann looks at evangelical prayer and religious experience. Angela Garcia examines the role of charismatic healing in addiction treatment. Thomas Blom Hansen analyzes the role of Hinduism in nationalist politics in Mumbai and the re-configuration of racial and religious identities in South Africa.
