The G20 meeting was 'A Missed Opportunity'

At this week’s G20 meeting in Seoul, world leaders are gathering to discuss economic and financial issues, leaving pressing security issues to be managed at bilateral talks or at the U.N. Security Council. Bruce Jones, a CISAC visiting scholar, says this is a missed opportunity. “If the G-20 continues to exclude diplomatic and security issues,” he argues, “the leaders who attend it may conclude that it doesn’t reflect their hard political priorities.” What’s needed is a new model for international cooperation, which “lets leaders discuss their overlapping security and economic interests, rather than keeping them artificially apart.”

Secretary of State Clinton spoke at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. May 27 on the administration's first National Security Strategy, a report submitted to Congress by each President to outline the intended U.S. response to major national security concerns. The Managing Global Insecurity project, led by CISAC's Stephen Stedman and Bruce Jones, helped organize the event. Read more »

Michael Chaitkin, CISAC 2008 Honors graduate, publishes thesis

in the news: NYU Center on International Cooperation on January 20, 2010

Michael Chaitkin, a 2008 CISAC honors graduate, has published his thesis as a policy report at NYU's Center on International Cooperation. The brief includes a forward by Bruce Jones, CIC director and CISAC consulting professor, and Richard Gowan, CIC associate director for policy. The report argues, contrary to the conventional wisdom, that sanctions are more likely to succeed when they yield conditions conducive to bargaining between the parties of the dispute. The author offers two policy recommendations to enable more effective application of sanctions. +PDF+
