Pete Sauer, Basketball Star, Dead at 35
Peter Sauer, a co-captain on the 1998 Final Four basketball team and a clutch player remembered for his smarts and toughness, died in July after collapsing during a pickup game in New York. He was 35.
Sauer, '99, played forward and started 96 games over four seasons for a team that went to four straight NCAA tourneys. "To me, he was kind of the epitome of what a student athlete should be," said Mike Montgomery, that era's coach. An economics major, Sauer worked in equity sales at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Survivors include his wife, Amanda, and daughters Cate, Charlotte and Cassie. Trusts have been established for each child; details for contributing can be found on the basketball page of the gostanford.com website.
