This is a major revision of an existing chapter.

The SLAC Environment, Safety, and Health Manual (SLAC-I-720-0A29Z-001-R023) is being revised.

Chapter 34, "Biosafety", has been revised to align SLAC?s procedures and protocols with Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 4th Edition, written by US Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Institutes of Health.

The chapter uses the Stanford Biosafety Manual and the Administrative Biosafety Panel to verify that biohazardous materials are categorized correctly and outlines the standards and regulations used to govern experimentation at SLAC.

The chapter provides definitions for commonly used terms in the use of biohazardous materials as well as SLAC (Stanford) specific terms describing the operational requirements for performing experiments using biohazardous materials.

The classification of biohazardous materials mechanism is further defined in the chapter. Guidelines for the various materials, requirements for different personnel, and SLAC?s use of the university Administrative Panel on Biosafety (APB) are described, along with their respective requirements.

Chapter requirements on the transportation of biohazardous materials are aligned with those of the US Department of Transportation and the International Air Transport Association. The roles and responsibilities of the researchers, program manager, and the researchers are defined.

This document replaces the existing Chapter 34, "Biohazards", published in October 1996.

For questions on the content of this chapter, contact the program manager, Jim Healy (ext. 4989, [email protected]).
