The way we make purchases and what we choose to buy has more than just a financial impact. Products and services procured at Stanford affect our environmental as well. We can adopt purchasing habits at work that consider our environmental impact. Adhering to Stanford's Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines makes a difference!

Did You Know?

  • Schools and departments at Stanford purchased 87,944 reams of office paper last year. If laid end-to-end, the paper trail would stretch for 15 miles.
  • Stanford placed 29,490 separate office supply orders last year, 40% of which were under $50 and required 780 truck deliveries to campus.

The One Less, Save More campaign makes it easy and rewarding to purchase goods and services in ways that minimize negative impacts on the environment. Sustainable purchasing practices can become the norm at Stanford with your help. Read Stanford's Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines to learn more ways to make a difference. In addition, here are three simple and actionable things to practice when making purchases for Stanford:

1. Consider Consuming Less

2. Consider Consolidating Orders

3. Choose Reusable and/or High Recycled Content Products from SmartMart

Take Action, Be Rewarded

  • Make A Pledge! All individuals who show their commitment to sustainable purchasing by taking the One Less, Save More pledge will be entered into a weekly raffle for a fantastic prize package.
  • Choose Environmentally-Friendly Paper! Individuals who switch from ordering new (virgin resource) paper to ordering high recycled-content paper will also be entered into a raffle for prize packages.
  • Consolidate & Reduce Departmental Orders! Stanford's purchasing department will monitor the number and size of office supply orders by building. The three buildings on campus with the most significant overall reduction in orders will be rewarded with a building-wide pizza party and personalized banner for display in the lobby.

Learn More

The One Less, Save More campaign strives to increase awareness of sustainable purchasing habits without compromising our standards for teaching, learning, and research. Representatives from Sustainable Stanford and the Purchasing and Contracts department hosted an open-invitation webinar to provide more information about the campaign and specific action times to change the purchasing norms at Stanford. A recording of the webinar is publicly available online.

After watching the recorded presentation, be sure to take the sustainable purchasing pledge and enter the campaign raffle. A short overview presentation is also available.
