Utilities Division manages Stanford’s environmental and compliance programs for domestic water, groundwater, wastewater, storm water, surface water, underground storage tanks, and related projects. The program elements include routine and special sampling, investigations, inspections, studies, and report preparation.
Drinking Water Quality
Stanford purchases high quality domestic water for the main campus, School of Medicine and residential areas from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Key information about domestic water quality is included in Stanford’s Annual Water Quality Report. The report provides information on the quality of the domestic water at Stanford that is supplied by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Additional domestic water topics, such as: chloramines, drinking water emergency preparedness and water main flushing can be found in the document library. Storm Water Pollution Prevention
Storm Water pollution prevention is accomplished by training various campus groups about best management practices for specific activities, providing targeted outreach materials, conducting frequent inspections, and investigating improper disposal of materials and wastes . In addition, Stanford installs and maintains new technologies such as bio-swales, porous pavements, and swirl separator devices which aid in storm water pollution prevention. Wastewater Pollution Prevention
The Wastewater compliance program works with campus groups in labs, kitchens, facilities and maintenance to ensure an understanding of the regulatory requirements for proper storage, use and disposal of products and hazardous materials. Water quality monitoring by both the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Control Plant and Stanford provides a measuring tool for program success. Improper storage and disposal of chemicals or accidental chemical spills can impact human health, and the environment. Learn more about Stanford's wastewater pollution prevention.
Kitchen Pollution Prevention
Stanford University’s Environmental Quality and Compliance group oversees the Kitchen and Food Services Pollution Prevention program. This program provides annual training for kitchen staff, and conducts periodic inspections of all kitchen facilities in order to prevent sewer blockages, and overflows contributing to non-compliance with both storm water and waste water regulations. For more information regarding this program please visit the kitchen program page.
Surface Water Quality and Monitoring
Stanford University participates in surface water quality monitoring on San Francisquito and Los Trancos Creeks as part of the Long-Term Monitoring and Assessment Program created by the former San Francisquito Creek Coordinated Resource Management and Planning (CRMP) Steering Committee. For more information regarding the monitoring program and reports please see: Surface water monitoring. Click here for Stanford's Lake Water Fact Sheet.
