Admissions
STEP actively seeks individuals of all cultures, races, religions, and ethnic origins with outstanding academic preparation and a commitment to working with adolescents in diverse school settings. STEP encourages applicants with a wide range of academic interests, experiences, accomplishments, and interests to apply. Previous experience working with children is a requirement for admissions; prior coursework in professional education is not required.
STEP teacher candidates are encouraged to develop a disposition of personal and professional responsibility for the improvement of education. They are encouraged to participate in professional organizations, to become active members of their school community, and to establish productive relationships with the families of their students and the communities in which their students live. Candidates acquire tools that help them become advocates for their students, agents of school change, and well-regarded and valued members of professionally caring and democratic educational communities. STEP candidates learn in collaborative communities and carry the disposition for professional collaboration with them into practice. Above all, they rely on each other and their teachers and mentors for intellectual, academic, emotional, and social support that further their professional growth and development as teachers.
