National prizes for school magazine

Stanford Medicine won seven awards in a national competition, including a gold medal in the staff-writing category. The magazine is produced by the medical school's Office of Communication & Public Affairs.

The honors were part of the 2006 Circle of Excellence awards sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, which includes univeristy and college alumni-relations, communications and development professionals.

For the staff-writing prize, the office submitted five magazine articles, including stories about RNA interference, an alumnus who operates a clinic for torture victims and how drugs are named.

In addition to the writing prize, the magazine received a silver medal for its issue on the crisis in health care, as well as a bronze medal in the overall category for special-interest magazines. Its design also garnered four awards: a bronze medal for overall visual design, a silver and a bronze for two illustrations, and a bronze for a two-page layout.

Rosanne Spector is the magazine's editor, David Armario its designer.
