Proxy Access to Stanford-Restricted Sources
Configuring Safari 3 or later on Macintosh
[Return to Stanford Proxy Home]
SETTING UP PROXYING IN Safari
-
Click Preferences from the Safari menu then choose
Advanced from the list of icons.
-
Next to Proxies click the
Change Settings button.
You should see the Network dialog box with Proxies highlighted
and a list with the heading Select a protocol to configure.
Check and highlight Automatic Proxy Configuration
in the list of protocols.
You should see an input box labled URL under the heading
Proxy Configuration File
- Enter the following URL in the URL input box:
-
https://library.stanford.edu/apcproxy/suproxy.pac
It's best to copy the URL from these instructions. Make
sure not to include any spaces before or
after the URL.
The dialog box should look like this image (taken from
Safari 5 - earlier versions may differ somewhat) when you
are finished, but note that the image shows only part of the proxy URL.
- Click OK then Apply and close all the dialog
boxes you opened.
HOW PROXYING WORKS
-
Your browser is now configured to use Stanford's proxy
server for resources that are restricted to Stanford users.
Any other Internet connections will not go through
the proxy server.
-
When you connect to a restricted resource, you will see
an intermediate screen that provides a link you can follow
to the remote site. If you have problems getting to any
pages on the site, please fill out this problem
report form.
TURNING PROXYING OFF
-
You shouldn't need to turn proxying off unless you are
using a laptop that is sometimes connected through the
Stanford network and sometimes connected from off-campus.
-
If you need to turn proxying off for any reason, simply
return to the Network dialog box and uncheck
the Automatic Proxy Configuration option under
"Select a proxy server to configure".
Choose Apply Now to save the changed setting
and then close the Network dialog box.
