Proxy Access to Stanford-Restricted Sources

Configuring Google Chrome on Windows

[Return to Stanford Proxy Home]

SETTING UP PROXYING IN GOOGLE CHROME

  1. Click the wrench icon in the browser toolbar then click Options to open the Options dialog box.

  2. Select the tab labeled Under the Hood.

  3. Scroll down to the Network section and click the button labeled Change proxy settings.

  4. Click the the Connections tab [View Image]

NOTE: Chrome requires a slightly different setup depending on how you connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    • For dial-up ISPs, such as EarthLink, you need to set your proxy configuration by selecting the “Dial-up Setting” you want to configure and clicking Settings....

    • For cable modem or DSL services, such as AT&T; DSL, click on LAN Settings...
  5. Click Use automatic configuration script in the Automatic Configuration dialog box
  6. Enter this URL in the box labeled Address:

    https://library.stanford.edu/apcproxy/suproxy.pac

NOTE: Under “Automatic Configuration” and “Proxy Server” make sure all other options are unchecked and all other fields are blank or greyed-out. Also, make sure to enter the complete URL shown here. It's best to copy and paste the URL from these instructions, but be careful not to enter any spaces before or after it. The dialog boxes differ slightly for LAN settings [View Image] or dial-up settings. [View Image]

  7. Click OK or Close to save your settings and close each window you opened.

PROXY AUTHENTICATION

  • Chrome is now configured to use Stanford's proxy server for resources that are restricted to Stanford users. Any other Internet connections will not go through the proxy server.

  • When you connect to a restricted resource, you will see an intermediate screen that provides a link you can follow to the remote site. If you have problems getting to any pages on the site, please fill out this problem report form.

TURNING PROXYING OFF

  • You shouldn't need to turn proxying off unless you are using a laptop that is sometimes connected through the Stanford network and sometimes connected from off-campus.
  • If you need to turn proxying off for any reason, simply return to the Automatic Configuration dialog box as described above.

Click Use automatic configuration script to uncheck this option and then click OK.
