Kaipo Matsumura joined Stanford Law School as a teaching fellow in 2011. He previously practiced antitrust, patent, and appellate law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he also participated in both the state and federal challenges to California’s Proposition 8. Before entering private practice, Matsumura served as a law clerk to the Honorable A. Wallace Tashima of the U.S Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Matsumura graduated from UCLA School of Law, where he served as Chief Articles Editor of the UCLA Law Review, earned the Jerry Pacht Memorial Constitutional Law Award, and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received a degree in English and Communication Studies from Northwestern University, where he won the Harriet Gilliam Memorial Prize for the best English thesis and the Edwin L. Shuman award for the best senior English major.

Matsumura’s research and writing interests include contract law, with a focus on issues of timing and consent, constitutional law, and gender, sexuality, and family relationships.
