From 1862-1887 downtown San Jose was home to Market Street Chinatown that housed more than 1000 residents, but on May 4, 1887, it was destroyed in an arson fire. One hundred years later, the archaeological remains of the Market Street Chinatown resurfaced during San Jose’s downtown redevelopment. Over the last year, Anthropology Associate Professor, Barbara Voss, jointly with the Anthropology Department and the Stanford Archaeology Center, and partnering with History San José and Chinese Historical and Cultural Project, has brought free and educational archaeology events to school-age children in Santa Clara County. Her project was recently featured in Stanford News and San Jose Mercury News.
