Questionnaire for media use from study on chronic media multitasking (2009)

Our paper on ‘Cognitive control in media multitaskers’ was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2009. We conducted a series of experiments to address the existence of systematic differences in information processing between heavy and light multitaskers. The abstract can be found here.

Please refer to the attached document for the relevant questionnaire, and follow the instructions given below.

Instructions for coding:

Step 1. Calculate the total time spent doing something other than the primary task for each block. This is done by multiplying the total task time (e.g., 1.1) by the decimal value for each simultaneous task item (e.g., all items in 1.2). Repeat this for each of the ten blocks.

Step 2. Add the total task times (1.1 + 2.1 …).

Step 3. Calculate the ratio of total time spent doing multiple tasks and the total time spent doing tasks (the added value from step 1 divided by the value from step 2).
