Program Overview – Faculty & Staff

The gateway to the Employee Incentive Program is the SHALA. Take 20 minutes to complete the online survey to assess the health of your current lifestyle. All your answers will be kept strictly private and confidential. Upon completion, you will instantly get a personalized report that tells you how you are doing and what you can do to make yourself healthier and happier. If you have taken the SHALA in years past, you will also receive a comparison of your annual results. Benefits-eligible employees who complete the SHALA are then eligible to move on to the other components of the program. These components provide additional opportunities for wellness, as well as opportunities to earn up to $300 in financial incentives.

Decide what health and wellness looks like for you and move to that portion of the program. You can move directly to the Wellness Profile or the BeWell Berries upon completion of the SHALA:

Wellness Profile

  1. BeWell Numbers – free biometric health screening tests done on campus or by your health care provider with a co-pay. BeWell Numbers are important health screenings that influence your risk for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Stanford’s trained BeWell staff will conduct this one-on-one appointment on a convenient date and time for you or you can have your provider complete this form and return it to the BeWell office. The specific values measured include: total cholesterol, HDL, glucose, body mass index (height and weight), waist circumference, and blood pressure.
  2. Wellness Advising – one-on-one meeting with a wellness advisor scheduled immediately after your on-campus health screening or scheduled after you have submitted your results from your health care provider. After completing BeWell Numbers, you will have the opportunity to discuss the results with a wellness advisor. Your advisor can help you establish a wellness plan and direct your attention to available resources. You can also receive guidance about creating short-term goals.
  3. Personal Wellness Plan – individualized plan that is completed online. Following your meeting with your wellness advisor, you will be ready to create your Personal Wellness Plan online. This plan enables you to develop goals and strategies for meeting your wellness goals.

Once you complete your wellness plan, as a benefits-eligible university employee you will receive a $200 (taxable) wellness reward. This reward is processed monthly. Qualified employees can expect to see the reward in their paycheck (line item “Wellness”) one-to-two pay periods following the month in which they complete their Personal Wellness Plan.

Group fitness classes and regular physical activity done on campus OR at your local gym will now count for this Berry. Group fitness classes on campus are offered through HIP/DAPER and are available to employees at a discounted rate. Note: a maximum of two classes per quarter may be taken at the $20 discounted rate. Additional classes can be taken at the regular class fee. Self-reported physical activity can be documented using the form on-line. (Only two self-reported activities will count towards the incentive.)
  7. BeWell Walkers – This is our FREE on-line walking program. The goal of this ten-week walking program is to gradually raise the level of physical activity you incorporate into your daily life. The program uses a very easy pedometer, online tracking log, email coaching, step journal, tip sheets and campus walking maps.
  8. Annual Physical Exam with Your Health Care Professional (self-report) – Regular well visits to your doctor are important to staying healthy. You must visit your physician for an annual exam/well-visit this calendar year in order to get credit for this activity. Credit is given for this activity when you supply the date of the exam.
  9. Wellness Advocate – (self-report) Wellness Advocates are Stanford employees dedicated to helping people in their community achieve better health and well-being. Wellness Advocates raise awareness of positive health habits with colleagues, family and/or friends through conversation, as well as the sharing of tips and tricks to eat better, get active, juggle multiple responsibilities or explore ways to unwind. You can also be a Wellness Advocate by living a healthy lifestyle yourself and role-modeling healthy behaviors for those around you. If you are helping others work toward improving their health and/or lifestyle, you are a Wellness Advocate. Share your successes with us to get credit for this BeWell Berry.

Benefits-eligible university employees who complete AT LEAST 5 of the 9 “BeWell Berry” activities will receive an additional $100 (taxable) wellness reward. These activities are a mixture of individual, group and self-report events. The $100 (taxable) wellness reward will be processed in the month that you complete the fifth Berry Activity and will be included in a regular paycheck under line item “Wellness.” Please note that only two self-reported activities will count towards the wellness reward.
