TOPP: Tagging of Pacific Predators

White sharks, elephant seals and bluefin tuna are among 23 marine species being tracked through the Tagging of Pacific Predators project. TOPP is led by a team of marine scientists, including Barbara Block, a professor of biology at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station and senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.

Fish Farm Wastes Can Drift to Distant Shores

Concentrated waste plumes from fish farms could travel significant distances to reach coastlines, according to a study co-authored by Roz Naylor and Jeffrey Koseff, senior fellows at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford. The study is the first detailed look at how "real world" variables, such as tides and currents, influence the flow of waste from fish farms and impact waterways and surrounding shorelines. The research was supported by the Lenfest Ocean Program

Leatherback Turtles Dive For Jellyfish

Tagging and tracking leatherback sea turtles has produced new insights into the turtles' behavior in a part of the South Pacific Ocean long considered an oceanic desert. The new data will help researchers predict the turtles' movements in the ever-changing environment of the open ocean, with the goal of reducing the impact of fishing on the endangered leatherback population.

On Oct. 14, 2010, the Woods Institute for the Environment held a reception for undergraduate and graduate students at Stanford's Y2E2 Building. In their welcoming remarks, Woods Co-Directors Buzz Thompson and Jeff Koseff presented a list of the top 10 ways students can become involved in environment and sustainability activities at Stanford. Undergraduates Kate Lowry and Milena Gonzalez also explained how Woods Institute grant and fellowship programs provide crucial support for student-run sustainability projects.

Global warming's impact on wine, corn industries

Understanding how global warming altered the lifecycles of plants and animals in the past can provide important insights about the impact of climate change in the future, says Stanford scientist Noah Diffenbaugh. His research team is using recorded observations of natural events to generate 30-year computer forecasts of how U.S. wine and corn production could be affected by global warming.

Woods and Precourt host Newsweek forum on energy and technology

On May 29, 2008, the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency hosted a Newsweek executive forum titled, "Energy's Future Is in Technology," at Stanford’s Jerry Yang & Akiko Yamazaki Environment & Energy Building. The panel discussion focused on innovation in supply, efficiency and alternative/renewable energy. David Jefferson, Newsweek’s senior business and technology editor, moderated the discussion with panelists Andrew Murr, Newsweek Los Angeles bureau chief; Jackalyne Pfannenstiel, chair of the California Energy Commission; Paul Siegele, Chevron’s vice president of strategic planning; Trae Vassallo, partner with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; and David Victor, Stanford law professor and director of the Program on Energy & Sustainable Development. Woods Director Jeff Koseff and Precourt Director Jim Sweeney gave opening and closing remarks.
