Dr. Marilyn Winkleby is an epidemiologist and Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine. She is also the Faculty Director of the Office of Community Health. Within the new Stanford CTSA, she is co-director of the Community Engagement component and Director of the K-12 Pipeline Program. For the last 22 years she has led a population health science research team that combines epidemiologic study with intervention research to further the understanding of social determinants of health. Her specific areas of focus are: 1) cardiovascular disease health behaviors, risk factors, and outcomes (smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, obesity, diabetes, hypertension); health status of ethnic minority and low socioeconomic groups; women's health; and community-based intervention studies. Of particular importance is her epidemiological and analytic expertise that is combined with knowledge of how social and physical aspects of neighborhoods can influence health. She has received numerous NIH and other Federal and State grants, and has published over 100 articles in public health, epidemiology, and medical journals. Her research is congruent with a number of faculty and student mentoring activities, including the 22-year-old Stanford Medical Youth Science Program, a summer residential program that she founded that has reached 500 low-income high school students historically underrepresented in higher education and prepared them for science and health professional careers.
