What is Women at Work?

Women at Work is a series of presentations and workshops that help prepare Stanford women to enter the workforce. Opportunities in different career areas are discussed, as well as issues common in the workplace. There are also opportunities for networking.

This year's Women at Work series, themed "Journey to Your Dream Job" and coordinated by staff member Anna Blue, successfully completed its events at the end of winter quarter. Listed below are this year's event descriptions as well as a comprehensive list of all events from previous years.

Women at Work 2014

Kick-Off Event: Thursday, January 9, 2014, 6:30 - 8:30 PM

Join us Thursday night for the Kick-off Event of this year’s Women at Work series. The event will jumpstart this year’s theme, “The Journey to Your Dream Job”, with fantastic speakers Rebecca Bjorklund from the Career Development Center, Megan Andrews from the investment company Northwestern Mutual, and Shari Palmer from the office of Undergraduate Education as they address challenges in the job market, personal finances, and available resources to students searching for career opportunities.

Why Go to Business School?: Friday, January 17, 2014, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

In the first lunch panel of the Women at Work series, representatives from the Stanford Business School will present on the advantages of a degree in business and the fantastic career paths that business school can lead to.

Financial Literacy: Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

The Women at Work series brings you Financial Literacy 101 from Andrea Chung, a Graduate Student Counselor at the Career Development Center, as she discusses the importance of salary negotiations and savviness in the job market. Event will include lunch and Q&A.

Teach for America, the Peace Corps, Fellowships, and So Much More: Friday, January 31, 2014, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

In this Women at Work series lunch panel, representatives from Teach for America, the Peace Corps, and the Haas Center, will be presenting on taking advantage of short-term service opportunities for the year after graduation.

The Perks and Challenges of Medical School: Friday, January 31, 2014, 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Dean Minor, the Dean of Stanford’s Medical School, will visit the WCC and cover a variety of topics from admission, to different medical fields, to the perks of getting an MD. Free lunch!

Law School Roundtable: Tuesday, February 11, 2014, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM

The final lunchtime event of the Women at Work series offers one-on-one time with some of the most fantastic law faculty the Bay Area has to offer: Dean Edward Tom, the Dean of Berkeley’s Law School and Juliet Brodie and Joan Petersilia from the Stanford Law School. Each of the fantastic speakers will present on how their law career has evolved and how a career in law works.

A Talk With San Francisco City Councilwoman Malia Cohen and Careers in Public Service: Monday, February 17, 2014, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

In the final event of the Women at Work series, San Francisco City Councilwoman Malia Cohen will speak about the value of a career in public service and about the importance of issue advocacy.

January 15, 2013: Asking the Right Questions

Join us for a conversation with Denise Benatar and Alexandra Russell on career formation and asking the right questions to get what you want out of work. If you have ever felt that you don’t know what to do next and what work might be right from you, then this is a conversation for you.

January 22, 2013: Making a Career in Social Justice

Have a passion for social justice but unsure of how to turn that into a career? Join us for a discussion with Shannon Farley, Spark’s founding Executive Director.
