Stanford University offers housing for single graduate students, couples without children, and students with children. The goals for graduate residences at Stanford are to provide an environment conducive to studying, services, and resources to facilitate academic achievement, and a pluralistic community in which programs address individual needs and promote social interaction.

University housing includes a range of residence options with rent rates that are generally lower than the surrounding community. Residence options available to single students include single and shared occupancy apartments. Couples without children and students with children live in furnished and unfurnished mid-rise and townhouse apartments. Campus housing, however, is a limited resource and students should not expect to receive housing for the duration of their graduate studies. Students who are assigned in to housing that is open year round, pay for housing over the summer, and stay in place for the next year are currently able to renew their housing for up to six years.

If you are interested in campus housing, you must accept the offer of admission and then submit a housing application on Axess between April 11 and May 10, 2012. New students who apply by May 10 and are willing to live anywhere are guaranteed a housing assignment by the end of the first week of Autumn Quarter. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered until the July assignment round, and have a lower chance of resulting in an assignment. Students admitted for the Autumn Quarter are also eligible to apply for summer housing if they wish to join the Stanford community early. Apply for summer housing online in a separate application on Axess by May 10, 2012. There is a limited amount of family housing available over the summer.
