Mission
The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program works to increase knowledge about the sciences and health professions, and offer guidance about the college admissions process to low-income and/or underrepresented minority students. To meet this goal, SMYSP offers a university-based five-week Summer Residential Program and school-based academic year health disparities curriculum. SMYSP also assists parents, teachers, counselors and mentors by offering them educational resources and training.
History
SMYSP began in 1988 as a student-directed program with strong faculty and Stanford support. It has grown into a complementary set of university- and school-based programs that offer academic enrichment in the biomedical sciences, college guidance, and long-term mentoring to low-income and underrepresented minority high school students.
Value
SMYSP supports Stanford’s outreach efforts to academically talented low-income and minority high school students through its university- and school-based programs, raising awareness of Stanford in diverse communities. SMYSP thereby helps change the course of science and medical education by affirming the value of diversity and academic opportunities for all students as core Stanford values.
SMYSP believes that helping low-income and ethnically diverse students reach their own educational goals is ultimately the most effective way to help improve the health care services available to underserved and low-income communities. Learn more about how you can help SMYSP reach its goals.
