Manager for campus-wide sustainability programs to join staff May 19

Stanford has hired Fahmida Ahmed as manager of sustainable programs in the university's Office of Sustainability and Energy Management. When she starts on May 19, Ahmed's role will be to support the office's executive director, Joseph Stagner, in implementing and improving sustainability programs throughout Stanford.
Ahmed will head a working group formed in 2006 that comprises representatives from academic departments and administrative offices across campus and makes policy and program recommendations to President John Hennessy and Provost John Etchemendy. That group is advised by teams focused on different areas, such as transportation, water, energy and atmosphere, as well as sustainable construction and procurement. Ahmed will work with those teams on a regular basis, while also managing day-to-day operations.
In addition, she will assist in the development and implementation of a campus greenhouse gas reduction plan. She also will manage the office's communications and community relations programs and, overall, assist Stagner's efforts to achieve long-range sustainability goals, which center on three concepts: respect for the environment, social equity and sound fiscal judgment based on long-term horizons.
Ahmed has served as sustainability specialist at the University of California-Berkeley since 2006, managing the California Climate Action Partnership and other campus sustainability programs. She holds a master's degree in public environmental management, with a focus on climate change policy, from UC-Santa Barbara.
