Here's Johnny

David Gonzalez Johnny Dawkins

Johnny Dawkins spoke during a press conference on April 28 in Stanford’s Kissick Auditorium. Dawkins, who spent the last 11 years at Duke University—mostly as the associate head coach under the wing of Mike Krzyzewski—becomes the 17th head coach in the history of the men’s basketball program at Stanford.

After a decade as the No. 2 coach at Duke, Johnny Dawkins is on his way to the Farm, where he'll lead the men's basketball team as the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men's Basketball.

Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby introduced Dawkins to the campus during a Monday news conference.

"We are thrilled to welcome Johnny and his family to Stanford," Bowlsby said. "His credentials as a player, combined with his coaching experience gained mentoring under a Hall of Fame coach at a university such as Duke, made him a perfect fit for Stanford. The philosophies of the two programs both on the court and in the classroom are very similar."

Dawkins, 44, replaces Trent Johnson, who now coaches Louisiana State.

"We're going to do something special here," Dawkins said. "It's not Johnny Dawkins' basketball program. It's our program."

Dawkins spent the last 11 years on Duke's coaching staff, most recently as the associate head coach under the wing of Mike Krzyzewski. During Dawkins' tenure, the Blue Devils won a national championship in 2001, six Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championships and seven ACC Tournament titles.

Saying he's "always admired" the Cardinal, Dawkins told a crowd at Monday's event that he didn't need much time to think about the six-year contract that Bowlsby offered him over the weekend.

"It took me about 10 minutes," he said.
