Biography 

William I. Schwartz is a partner of Morrison & Foerster and co-founder of the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group.

He concentrates on the representation of companies in business transactions and counseling involving intellectual property and technology, including licenses, development agreements, distribution and commercialization activities, joint ventures, and services arrangements.  His focus is on matters relating to mobile phones and other wireless devices, communications equipment, software (including both open source and proprietary software), cloud computing, semiconductors, electronic commerce, and other advanced information technology.

Mr. Schwartz joined Morrison & Foerster in 1984 and became a partner in 1990.  He is resident in Morrison & Foerster’s San Francisco office, but has also worked in the firm’s Tokyo office.

He has been recommended as a leading lawyer by various legal directories, including Chambers USA, Legal 500 US, IAM Patent 1000, and Best Lawyers.

Mr. Schwartz received his J.D. with honors from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was an editor of The University of Chicago Law Review.  Before starting his law career, he was a reporter and editor for the Asian edition of The Wall Street Journal, based in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
