Biography 

Goodwin Liu is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. Before joining the state’s highest court on September 1, 2011, Justice Liu was Professor of Law at the UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and served as Associate Dean from 2008 to 2010. His primary areas of expertise are constitutional law, education law and policy, and the U.S. Supreme Court. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Liu earned his bachelor's degree from Stanford in 1991, attended Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, and graduated from Yale Law School in 1998. He clerked for Judge David S. Tatel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court.

His experience also includes litigation practice in the Washington office of O'Melveny & Myers and government service as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education and as Senior Program Officer for Higher Education at the Corporation for National Service.
