At the Knight Fellowships we urge our fellows to resist the temptation to focus narrowly on the innovative projects they are pursuing here because creativity, inspiration and break-through moments often come out of the most unexpected places. We encourage and nudge them to try new things, to rekindle personal interests that often get crowded out by the demands of journalistic careers. For 2012 Knight Fellow T. Miller, one such moment happened in a Stanford poetry class — which was about the last place he expected to discover a cool new tool that could be a huge help to investigative journalists like himself. The Reporters Lab recently talked with T. and the Stanford student who invented Muse. “It was just this moment of synergy between two completely different ideas,” Miller told lab managing editor Tyler Dukes. But Muse isn’t just for investigative journalists.
