Sticks and Stones May Break My Heart: How Early Environment Shapes Lifelong Cardiovascular Risk

Dr. Janet Rich-Edwards, ScD
Director of Developmental Epidemiology, Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology
Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health

In the US, one in three women develops cardiovascular disease.  As a principal investigator of the Nurses Health Study 2, which has followed over 118,000 nurses since 1989, Dr. Rich-Edwards and her group at Harvard are exploring early life factors that influence the risk of developing chronic disease in adulthood - including the possible role of maltreatment on heart health. In addition, she has recently received an NIH grant to study “Violence, Genes, and Cardiovascular Disease in Women”.
