Stanford is home to two unique natural laboratories — Hopkins Marine Station on the Monterey Peninsula and Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, west of the main campus. Both provide outstanding environmental research and teaching facilities.

Hopkins Marine Station

Hopkins Marine Station, the oldest marine laboratory on the West Coast, is located in Pacific Grove, CA, 90 miles south of Stanford. Hopkins students live near the station while studying and conducting research with faculty members in residence.

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve

Jasper Ridge is a 1,189-acre natural laboratory for fundamental studies in ecology, hydrology, geology and archaeology. The eco-friendly Leslie Shao-Ming Sun Field Station hosts a wide range of classes and workshops every year.
